Welcome

The first day of the meeting commenced with the registration of the participants according to the agenda. Professor Venieris welcomed the partners, and introduced them to the objectives of the project. The partners discussed about the project’s logo and agreed on the one that is currently being used.

Presentation of the cooperating Universities and team members

Following the presentation of the FASTER targets, methodology, work packages, timeplan and management structure and positions, the partners presented briefly the Universities that participate to the project and the team members involved: Prof. Venieris introduced AUEB, Anna Białek-Jaworska UW, Zhelyu Vladimirov SUSKO, Dimitrios Kardaras CITY and finally Jan Buleca presented TUKE. Following the presentation of the 5 universities, a light lunch was offered.

Presentation of the Work Packages

Next topics on the first day’s agenda involved the overview of the 7 work packages of the FASTER project.

  • Work Package 1 Management was presented by Sandra Cohen. In the discussion that followed, the partners agreed to prepare e-mails for the basic FASTER members (e.g. fasterall@XX), and sub e-mails for the committees (e.g. fasterSC@XX for the steering committee, fasterRC@XX for the research committee, etc.) Partners agreed to indicate via e-mail the people to be included in the mailing list, and to send AUEB the nominees for the evaluation committee and their CVs. Also the exact days and time of the meetings are to be arranged by taking into consideration the differences in time zones.
  • Work Package 2 Online educational platform was presented by Orestes Vlismas. During the discussion, the partners decided to develop the questionnaires by using google.docs (when applicable, otherwise by hard copy). The target groups will be directed to the FASTER web site, where a link to the questionnaire will be provided. Different links will satisfy the needs of the different languages. Also, the draft questionnaire for the undergraduate and postgraduate students developed by AUEB was handed out to the partners. Zhelyu Vladimirov suggested to specify question 2.7 “links to electronic databases” and proposed that it should change to “links to accounting electronic databases”. Then the partners discussed about the interviews and agreed on the number of interviews per partner and that the interviews will operate as a pilot to the questionnaire, assuring its quality. Hard copy questionnaires should be used in order to retrieve answers from students, etc. Electronic completion of questionnaires will not be obligatory.
  • Work Package 3 e-modules and educational products was presented by Zhelyu Vladimirov. Concerning the glossary the partners decided that AUEB will define 500 terms in English and then disseminate them to the partners to translate them into national languages. Regarding the modules the following were agreed: Module 1 will be of approximately 26 pages, containing 1 example, 5 exercises and 10 self assessment questions (including both multiple choice and true/false questions). Due to their national perspective, Modules 2, 3, 4 and 5 will have the following content: 2 pages in common for all partners with general theory and 8 pages per partner with national theory. Same as Module 1, they will contain 1 example, 5 exercises and 10 self assessment questions each. Modules 6, 7 and 8 has a general perspective and will be of approximately 20 pages, providing similarly 1 example, 5 exercises and 10 self assessment questions.
  • The presentation of Work Package 4 FASTER pilot use – courses was made by Grazyna Bukowska, and the partners discussed about the distinction between visitors and users of the FASTER web site. Moreover the partners agreed to keep metrics for the visitors, and to collect demographic information of the users.  There was much discussion about how the evaluation process of the platform would take place (e.g. whether it should be taught in classes, etc.). An important issue discussed was how to motivate students to be actively engaged in the evaluation process. Towards this aim, partners had the idea to provide a certificate for users just acting as testers and another one for those who would successfully pass a test that would be developed explicitly for this purpose. The details of the applicability of this idea will be discussed in the progress of the project.
  • Work Package 5 Dissemination was presented by Sandra Cohen and the partners discussed the various dissemination tasks and exchanged ideas about the dissemination activities.
  • The presentation of Work Package 6 Exploitation was made by Dana Palova. In the discussion that followed, the partners discussed the perspectives of an international conference and two options were proposed: the first was to present the FASTER project in a session within other international conference, and the other to organize an event on e-learning in Athens and attract international interest.
  • Finally, Work Package 7 Evaluation was presented by Sandra Cohen and the partners discussed about the evaluation and assessment of the project’s results. At this point the first day of the meeting was over.

Dinner

Friday 10th February 9.30 am - 2.30 pm

Financial rules and management - Cost claim process, progress and final report

On the second day of the meeting all the attendants of the first day were present. During this day the FASTER grant agreement, financial rules and financial management as well as the Cost claim process, progress and final report and the Consortium communication tools were presented to the group by Niki Bouziotopoulou, AUEB. The partners were informed about all the financial remarks and financial issues involved as well as the progress reports, their structure and the FASTER expenditure forms. It was made clear that the contracts, even if written in national languages, should clearly define the names, time periods and the specific work packages that are involved. In the discussion that followed, the hours that constitute a working day for each partner, the relations among partners in case of cooperation problems and the necessity of developing a stamp with the FASTER codes were discussed.

Demonstration of the platform and closings

At that point, a demonstration of the electronic platform took place and the partners were informed about the operation of the platform. Finally, Anna Białek-Jaworska and Grazyna Bukowska presented the agenda of the 2nd kick-off meeting that will take place in Warsaw, Poland.
